Many inventions in the history of animation are tied directly to the development of film and computers
Before the invention of film, there were several devices used to depict motion in figures. An example would be the thaumatrope, a small circular disk or card with two different pictures on each side that was attached to a piece of string running through the center. When the string was twirled quickly between fingers, the two images appear to be combined into one single image. Another early prototype of animation is the zeotrope, a circular spinning device affixed with mirrors. This allowed for the simulation of movement with up to 80 frames and 15 minutes of action.
The Fleischer Brothers revolutionized animation by creating the Rotoscope. This device made it possible to place drawings on live action film. The Fleischer Brothers took advantage of this new technology in their cartoons by having characters like Ko-Ko the Clown leave the drawing and interact with their creators.
There are many different approaches to creating animation, and they keep rising over the years. Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is another big invention that revolutionized animation. It is the application of using computer graphics to create or contribute to film. It can be either 2D or 3D, is used for creating scenes and/or special effects in film. The first fully computer animated feature film was Pixar's, Toy Story.
Nowadays anyone can create animations in the comfort of their own homes by using simple computer programs.
